Baker Lake - Shannon Creek Campground -Washington

Every time we visit Baker Lake we always wish we could stay longer. Rain or shine Baker Lake is the epitome of Pacific Northwest moodiness mixed with unparalleled beauty. Our wish came true when we stayed at Shannon Creek Campground.

Shannon Creek is a small 20-site campground nestled along the western shore of Baker Lake in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The Baker Lake area has everything the Pacific Northwest is famous for; glacier-covered mountains, roaring rivers, hiking and old-growth forests.

Each campsite is both large and private. We found ourselves not wanting to leave our cozy site and spent a nice afternoon playing cards and enjoying the quietude.

Baker Lake is fantastic for boating, water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and swimming. Shannon Creek Campground has a boat launch which has picnic and small beach areas for all day enjoyment. The lake itself is surrounded by 2,000 ft. cliffs and is a beautiful and unique blue color.

The Baker Lake trail is located nearby the campground and climbs above the eastern shoreline of Baker Lake. Camping is also available at the trailhead, which also happens to be the end of the road. The Baker River Trail leads to the North Cascades National Park. There are also many other trails to find and a few rock outcroppings for climbers to practice on.

If you are a photographer looking for that moody, misty, rainy vibe Baker Lake is your dream come true. Below are a few of the photos we’ve taken at this location over the years.

Our Take: Just we were ready to give up on public campgrounds Shannon Creek renewed our faith! The weekend we spent was the perfect temperature, intensely quiet and extremely relaxing. We felt very lucky to to have scored a spot in this wonderful hidden Pacific Northwest oasis.

Be sure to include a visit to The Shadow of the Sentinels, which is a short hike through an old growth forest and well worth the stop.
