Kitsap Memorial State Park - Washington

Located on the Hood Canal, in Washington State, Kitsap Memorial State Park is a modest and fascinating park.

A romantic forest area, located on the North side, was so peaceful.  We were sheltered from the rain and surrounded by mist.  In nicer weather an entire day could be spent there reading and forest bathing.

A large Log Hall is available for weddings and events and is so grand and handsomely appointed, we found ourselves brainstorming different events to hold there.

The beach itself had plenty to see and do.  Low tide reveals oysters, tiny crabs and seashells.  Anglers were actively fishing from the beach throughout the day.  Canoes passed by regularly and one canoeist stopped and asked us how to find the walk in campsites.  We didn’t see a sunrise or sunset due to the fog but the Washington Parks website says, “On clear mornings, the east-facing Olympic Mountains reflect pink and orange. On warm summer evenings, their peaks are often cast in silhouette by the glowing red sky.”

With only 35 camping spots this location is unique, allowing campers quietude or friendly neighbor conversations.  Four small cabins are also available to reserve, each with its own picnic table and fire ring.

The day use area has horseshoe pits, frisbee fields, a playground (playground closed for COVID) and picnic tables.

Our Take: Our campsite was a fantastic size and very private.  We stayed in site #36.  Picnic tables at each camp site looked new and were generously sized.  Individual private bathroom and shower stalls were a luxury.  The fog and mist that surrounded the shoreline was a photographer's dream. It absolutely poured rain during our stay, sites are dirt not gravel so we got pretty muddy.
