West Beach Resort - Orcas Island

Peace, quietude, saltwater and campfires. Does it get any better? West Beach Resort on Orcas Island is the ideal place to recharge and renew.

West Beach Resort is located on, you guessed it, the West Beach of Orcas Island. The west side of the island is known for its epic sunsets and sunny days. Open since 1938 West Beach Resort has something for every guest.

As a tradition, each night at sunset a large bonfire is built and free popcorn is handed out to guests to enjoy as they sit back and watch the sun drop over crystalline waters.  We enjoyed ordering coffee, ice cream and drinks from their Beachfront Bar which doubles as an adventure rental office.  Guests can book boat tours, kayaks and canoes.

We stayed in one of the Resort’s Glamping Tents. Cabins are also available as well as camping spots which are RV friendly. Our tent was large and well made. Tents can sleep up to four guests, if someone is willing to sleep on a futon. Each tent comes with a private fire ring, picnic table, indoor table, queen bed, futon, towels and toiletries. Glamping Tent guests have access to a large bath and shower house not far from the tents. Be sure to bring your quarters, showers are coin operated.

Orcas Island itself is an incredible destination. Thoughtful restaurants, fresh oysters, breweries, distilleries, wineries and farms are all welcoming and fun to explore. Some of the places we visited and recommend are:

Moran State Park is also a popular Orcas Island destination for its miles of hiking trails, gorgeous camping spots and the tallest lookout tower on the island, which sits atop Mount Constitution. A small visitor center is open year round offering a brief history of the area and a fantastic gift shop.

Getting to Orcas Island: The island is accessible by boat, ferry or a small airport. We chose the ferry so that we would be able to drive around to different destinations on the Island. Plan to make a reservation since the ferries are often sold out. It’s a little difficult to get on the island but not so difficult to get off the island.
